Caribbean recycling Summit

About the Summit: To address solid waste management issues in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and in the Caribbean region, the Caribbean Recycling Summit is designed to gather broad representation from all sectors working on waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. The Summit aims to promote Zero Waste initiatives and engaging Caribbean communities in “closing the loop.” As defined by the National Recycling Coalition: “Sustainable Materials Management is a critical strategic shift away from the past strategy of waste management toward a holistic resource management system that strives to use less materials overall, reduce toxins, recover more used materials, create new jobs, and foster economic development.” Goal of the Summit and Format: The key to this Summit is to launch strategies that will benefit the local economy, environment, and create local jobs. This Summit is designed to be unlike a typical conference experience, rather than a lecture-based model, participants will be engaged in facilitated discussions. This is a method to actively connect all sectors on developing and committing to solutions. A vision and action plan will be developed to implement Caribbean-based zero waste goals. A broad spectrum of representatives are expected to participate including federal, regional, and local governments, businesses, recycling organizations, non-profit organizations, teachers and especially students. |
