What is law 51-2022?

LAW TO PROHIBIT THE SALE AND USE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN ALL COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENT 

As of July 1, 2024, according to Law 51-2022, the sale and use of single-use plastics is prohibited in all commercial, sales and distribution establishments.

What are the single-use plastics according to the law? 

• Plastic cutlery, plates, and straws 
• Plastic cups, mugs, and food containers made from expanded polystyrene 

Fines

• First Offense: $500
• Second Offense: $1,000 
• Third Offense and more: $5,000

EXCEPTIONS

• National/State Emergency Declaration (by government) 
• Meat packaging (raw, groceries) 
• The law includes fast food businesses but only affects the disposal of single-use plastics
