San Francisco on Track to Become Zero Waste City - PBS NewsHour
  • San Francisco is trying to become the first city with zero waste. By requiring residents and businesses to separate compostable items such as food scraps, as well as recyclable items, NewsHour correspondent Spencer Michels reports that the city has already reduced a huge amount of garbage from ending up in landfills.

Japan as a Ground Zero for a No-waste Lifestyle
  • This Christian Science Monitor story demonstrates how in the small village of Kamikatsu, Japan, its mayor Kazuichi Kasamatsu has taken a progressive no waste, garbage-free approach to sustainable materials management.  The town has 34 separate recycling categories, sends its food scraps to a composter, and has educational displays of products made of recyclable materials.  See video below for more information.
