Vieques Home
Vieques is an island municipality of Puerto Rico that lies just eight miles east of the main island. It is sometimes referred to as the “Isla Nena.” Vieques, 21 miles long and four miles wide (134 square miles), has approximately 9,000 permanent inhabitants and two small metropolitan centers: Isabel Segunda (Isabel II) to the north and Esperanza to the south. Nearly two-thirds of the island is undeveloped and it is home to the well-known bioluminescent bay, Mosquito Bay. Vieques has garnered particular interest, however, due to the island’s more than 60-year use by the US Navy as a bombing range and testing ground, and the resulting residual environmental effects on the landscape.
The PRRP has chosen Vieques as a pilot community because of its unique solid waste management challenges, and because improving its environment and quality of life is an objective of the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico. Things learned from model programs established in Vieques would be valuable to other communities throughout Puerto Rico facing similar socio-economic-environmental challenges Master Plan for the Sustainable Development of ViequesThe Master Plan for the Sustainable Development of Vieques is divided into 3 parts:
Part 1: Analysis of Situation [in Spanish] Part 2: Recommendations [in Spanish] Part 3: Land Use, Strategies and Implementation [in Spanish] in the News
